Media Literacy Trainings: A Path to Enhancing Critical Thinking and Information Security

The “Together We Can” project, implemented by the Human Rights Foundation with the support of the IFA Zivik Programme and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, has completed a series of media literacy trainings in six regions of Ukraine. These trainings became an important part of the initiative aimed at supporting local communities in combating disinformation and enhancing information security.

During the trainings, participants became familiar with the latest methods of combating fake news, learned fact-checking techniques, and worked on developing critical thinking skills as well as using modern tools for verifying information.

Chernivtsi Region
On May 16, the training in Vyzhnytsia was conducted by Vitaliya Kozmenko. Participants studied fact-checking techniques, disinformation detection, and deepfakes. They also learned algorithms for creating safe content that helps avoid manipulations in media.

Sumy Region
On May 16, the training in Sumy was conducted by Marina Osukhina. Participants worked on effective strategies for combating disinformation and learned to apply practical tools for fact-checking. One of the key topics was the development of communication strategies for managing information flows in wartime conditions.

Kirovograd Region
On May 20, the training in Kropyvnytskyi was conducted by Oksana Tkachenko. During the training, participants mastered tools for fighting fake news and learned to use artificial intelligence in media. Special attention was given to the importance of media literacy in the context of modern information warfare.

Zaporizhzhia Region
On April 22, the training in Zaporizhzhia was conducted by Iryna Tonkih. Participants worked on developing skills to recognize toxic content and artificially created news. They studied methods for verifying sources of information and analyzed the threats arising from media consumption during wartime.

Chernihiv Region
On June 13, the training in Chernihiv was conducted by Oksana Stelmakh and Yulia Peretyatko. Participants learned to recognize manipulations in the media, worked with cybersecurity tools, and discussed the importance of critical thinking in the context of information warfare. Exercises were also conducted to improve information perception under stress and during military conflicts.

Cherkasy Region
On June 3, the training in Cherkasy was conducted by Olga Rylova. Participants focused on creating responsible media content and verifying information. They also discussed ethical standards in journalism and the role of media in shaping public opinion during crises.

These trainings became an important step in developing media literacy among community leaders and media activists. The “Together We Can” project contributes to strengthening community cohesion and restoring trust in communities through the use of modern tools to combat disinformation and manipulations.

The implementation of this project helped community leaders not only fight fake news but also contributed to the development of sustainable communication strategies for effectively managing information in post-conflict communities.
